Horizontal Cabling
(Horizontal Distribution System)

The horizontal distribution system distributes the signals from the Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) to work areas. The horizontal distribution system consists of: cables, cross-connecting blocks, patch panels, jumpers, and connecting hardware pathways, which include supporting structures such as cable trays, conduits, and hangers that support the cables from the intermediate distribution Frame (IDF) to the work areas.

The horizontal wires, which run from workstations on the same floor to the telecom room, are terminated on punch down termination, or directly onto a patch panel. The punch down terminations or patch panels can be rack mounted, cabinet mounted or wall mounted. In the telecom room, network equipment such as a hub or switch is connected to each station cable, which electrically terminates the cable run. The hub or switch then passes the computer signal on to other work stations or servers, or even to other telecom rooms for ultimate connectivity with the entire network.

Backbones
(Vertical Cabling)

All wiring between telecommunications closets, equipment rooms, and entrance facilities, including all cables, mechanical cable terminations, and intermediate and main cross-connects. Backbone wiring runs between telecommunications closets, equipment rooms and entrance facilities on the same floor, from floor to floor, and between buildings.

A backbone distribution system provides connection between entrance facilities, equipment rooms and telecommunication rooms. In a multi-floor building the backbone distribution system is composed of the cabling pathways between floors and between multiple Intermediate Distribution Frame (IDF) rooms. In a campus environment the backbone distribution system is composed of the cabling pathways between buildings.

Telecom rooms are then connected together by backbone cabling (also called vertical for floor to floor connections). This backbone cabling typically runs from floor to floor. In order to reduce cost, telecom rooms should be located directly above one another as this minimizes the length of the cable runs.

With the emerge of Gigabit Ethernet and 10 Gigabit Ethernet, fiber optic cable is the most appropriate choice for backbone cabling since fiber optic cable provides much higher bandwidth than traditional Cat5, Cat6 or even Cat7 twisted pair copper cables. Another advantage of fiber is that fiber cables can run much longer distance than copper cable, which makes it especially attractive for backbone cabling. Because backbone cabling typically passes through from floor to floor, the cables used for backbones have very different requirements then horizontal cabling.
